What to Know About Dental Bridges

Dental bridges serve as an effective and fixed replacement solution for individuals with one or more missing teeth. These bridges are designed to cover the gaps left by missing teeth, preventing the remaining teeth from shifting and maintaining proper alignment.

Timely replacement of missing teeth is crucial to avoid potential issues such as bad bite, gum disease, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and premature aging.

Unlike dentures, which are removable, dental bridges are fixed prosthetic devices. They are cemented onto existing teeth or dental implants and can only be removed by your dentist if necessary. The teeth that anchor the bridge are called abutments, while the artificial tooth attached to the abutments is referred to as the ‘pontic’.

Our dentist will carefully assess the health and strength of adjacent teeth selected to support the false tooth before designing a dental bridge for you. In your first visit, the abutment teeth will be prepared, and impressions of your teeth will be taken. While your permanent bridge is being made, a temporary bridge will be provided to protect your exposed teeth and gums.

During your second visit, your dentist will remove the temporary bridge and place the new permanent bridge after checking and adjusting its fit.

Several visits may be scheduled to ensure the proper fit of the metal framework and bite. Once your dentist is certain that the permanent bridge fits comfortably, it will be permanently cemented over its supporting teeth and secured in place.

Types of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges can be made from different materials such as metal, ceramic, and zirconia. There are three main types of dental bridges based on the availability of supporting teeth:

Traditional bridges

Consist of two abutment teeth and one or more pontics between them. These are the most common types of bridges and can be made from porcelain fused to metal or all-ceramics.

Cantilever bridges

Used when there are supporting teeth on only one end of the missing tooth or teeth. This method is less popular and not widely recommended.

Resin-bonded bridge (Maryland bridge)

Made of plastic teeth and supported on either side by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to the backs of your existing teeth. This method is commonly used to replace a single missing front tooth.

Advantages of Dental Bridges

The benefits of replacing missing teeth with dental bridges include restoring your smile and ability to speak and chew properly, maintaining the shape of your face, and preventing bite disturbances caused by drifting of the remaining teeth.

Dental bridges can last from 5 to 15 years or even a lifetime with proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups (once a year) at the dentist’s office.

To maintain good oral hygiene, brush with an interdental brush twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and floss under the bridge with special dental floss. Avoid chewing hard and crunchy foods, such as ice cubes, to prolong the life of your bridge.
